More or Less ads ?

More or Less ads ?
Do you use more or less ads on your proxies ? I have been meaning to do this for a long time but have never got around to testing this out.

From what i have heard it is better to use less ads but place them carefully so that they will appeal to the user and blend in with the template. But on the other hand ... Why don't you just use lots of ads that stand out and that will get more noticed ?

I haven't got any proper results or proof of which method works, so if you have done this test please share your experience ) As they both have good reasons why you should use each technique.

RE: More or Less ads ?
I think lots of ads annoy users, you will probably get a few click but you will for sure get a user that will never come back to your site. Want to test it out? Visit a good looking proxy site with well blended ads, and another one with lots of pop ups, bad layout, and ads all over the page. Judge for yourself!

No matter how fast and secure is your proxy, if you trick them with making them think the google search form is the proxy form and pops on every single proxified page, there's a 95% they'll leave and never come back.

RE: More or Less ads ?
Put your ads in the right places. I fill my home page with adsense to it brink. That wouldn't bother me as a user. I have adbrite set to do a full page ad right when they start surfing. That way any user that surfs at least one page get shown the ad. But the ads are set to not do another full page ad for 6hrs with that user. Inlines and banners are unubtrusive so i have a bidvertiser and Adbrite banner. Bidvertiser in the navigation bar and adbrite in the actual site they are surfing but blended well. What it finally comes down to is would you like to use your own service. Take a moment and use your own proxy for a while. Do the flash banners annoy you? Do all the pop ups piss you off? Well they do the same for your users as well. Would you use your proxy again? Answer that and you will know if they will

Why would we want same user to visit our proxy site??

Same user would know about our site, they will just keep on using our bandwidth and won't click on Ad's as they would know which are ads and which are links.

New users would definately click on our ads,

I think we are making proxy to earn money not to get permanent users that just uses up bandwidth and never click ads.

Because no website can survive on new users only. You need repeat loyal visitors to keep any web property viable, proxy or not. Sure the majority of repeat visitors won't click the adsense on the homepage, they'll jump straight to the form. But then, that's what the cpm advertising is for on the proxified pages. Also with googles new interest based ads, etc, even a repeat visitor may find an advert of interest to them and click through to it.

Yes proxy webmasters are here to make money, but I myself (and hopefully most) also do it to provide a needed service to the users. I have a few proxies that thrive on repeat visitors only basically. Maybe only 20 or so uniques and a few hundred repeat. I still make good money from them, and the users are happy because they know my service is reliable.

Also happy users can generate new users. If you've got a strong loyal usergroup, of course they'll tell their friends, post about it in their myspace blogs, etc etc. It's a round robin effect.

Cheers!

RE: More or Less ads ?
I use more ads in my proxy but nothing annoying like pop-ups. Managing a proxy involves a lot of money. So placing more ads helps me get a high CTR and the money to cover my server costs.

Flexible server colocation makes your life easier. 1u colocation is the most suitable rack space.)
